Kalamata Airport: The Main Gateway to the Peloponnese

Kalamata Airport — named after Captain Vassilis Constantakopoulos — is one of the key entry points to the Peloponnese. It started as a military base in 1959 and began serving civilian flights in 1986. By the 1990s, the airport added its first international routes, making the region easier to reach for travellers from across Europe.

With the development of Costa Navarino and the growing interest in the area, the airport has become an important hub for tourism and for people who spend part of the year living in the Peloponnese. Today, it’s used by holiday visitors, long-term residents, expats, and property owners alike.

Located just 10 minutes from Kalamata and about 50 minutes from Costa Navarino, it offers quick access to the beaches, towns, and villages of the region. Whether you’re visiting for a short break or living here full-time, this makes travelling much easier.

Where You Can Fly from Kalamata

Kalamata Airport mainly operates seasonally, from mid-spring to early autumn. During these months, there are direct flights from the UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, and domestic flights from Thessaloniki.

In October, the airport also adds flights to Athens and Heraklion (Crete).

During the months around the main season — March, April, October, and November — you’ll also find flights from Finland, Denmark, and Sweden.

From December to February, the airport is at its quietest, with only the Thessaloniki connection operating. International flights begin returning in March as the new season starts.

Why the Airport Matters

For families, expats, business travellers, and seasonal residents, having an international airport nearby makes a big difference.

It has also helped the local economy grow, leading to new businesses, tourism services, and residential developments — especially around Kalamata and the wider Messinia area.
